ALL ABOUT THE CUSHION CUT

ALL ABOUT THE CUSHION CUT

The timeless cushion cut diamond features large square facets that maximize brilliance. The cut’s softly rounded corners channel a delicate, romantic feel. Sought after for centuries due to their enduring sophistication, cushion cut rings may be less brilliant than their round cut diamond counterpart but often have better fire which adds to their appeal. Cushion cut diamonds come in two kinds of facet placements: vintage and modern scintillation. Vintage facets highlight an enthralling brightness with small tables and prominent facets placed at the bottom. On the other hand, modern scintillation radiates like crushed ice with small facets set close together to increase light reflection.

HISTORY OF THE CUSHION CUT DIAMOND

Tracing as far back as the 19th century, the cushion cut diamond, known initially as the mine cut, was a square cut with rounded corners named after Brazillian diamond mines. Over time, the cushion cut diamond evolved thanks to a better understanding of diamond cutting and now features 64 facets instead of the original 58. Because of its intense popularity, most of the gemstones, not only diamonds, of the 19th century were cushion cut, including some of the largest and most iconic diamonds in history, like the Hope Diamond, the Regent Diamond, and the yellow Tiffany Diamond.

WHY CHOOSE A CUSHION CUT RING?

The cushion cut diamond's soft and romantic silhouette is guaranteed to glisten brightly as the center stone, whether placed in a solitaire, halo, or side stone setting. A cushion cut diamond’s ageless shape melds exceptionally well as a three stone engagement ring—also called a trilogy ring where the trio of stones represents a couple’s past, present, and future. It is no surprise that many celebrities today, such as Meghan Markle and Jennifer Garner, wear a cushion cut engagement ring. These classic beauties are especially popular in antique-style settings and will quickly become an heirloom piece worth handing down for generations to come.
